Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 October 2026
Setwl is a free, crowdsourced record of what it is actually like to live on a particular street. This page explains what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do about it. It is written to be read, not to be survived.
Setwl is operated from Nigeria and is subject to the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. If you only read one section, read “What is public”.
What is public
Reviews on Setwl are public by design. When you post a review, the following is visible to anyone, without signing in:
- Your ratings for power, water, security, drainage and serenity
- Anything you wrote in the review text
- Any street tag, rent range and property type you entered
- The area the review is about, and the date it was posted
Your name and email address are never shown next to your review. Reviews are displayed without any author name. Please do not put your own name, phone number, house number or anyone else's personal details into the review text, because that text is published exactly as you write it.
Street Pulse reports are public too. Anyone can see that someone on a street reported no light, flooding or a heavy downpour, and when it was reported. The reports are not attributed to anyone by name.
The Pulse Map page goes a step further and publishes counts and percentages worked out from those reports — for example “68% of power reports in this area said no light”, reports by hour of day, and rankings across areas. Nothing on that page identifies an individual.
Following an area is not public. Only you can see the areas you watch.
What we collect
When you just browse
You are signed in anonymously in the background so the site can load data. This does not identify you. We store a copy of area data in your browser's local storage so the site loads faster on your next visit; you can clear it at any time through your browser settings.
When you post a review
You sign in with Google. We receive and store your Google account identifier and email address. The identifier is attached to your review so the same person cannot review the same area repeatedly. Your email is used to contact you about your own contributions. Neither is displayed publicly.
When you request an area
If you ask us to add an area, we store the area details and, if you choose to give it, your email address. The email field is optional. We use it for one thing: to tell you when the area you asked for goes live, or when a review you left alongside the request is published.
Street Pulse
Street Pulse is the one-button report of what is happening on your street right now; it used to be called Rain Check. You can report power (light on, no light), the road (clear, road works, flooded) and the weather (clear, overcast, drizzle, heavy downpour). You do not need to sign in for this — you are already signed in anonymously in the background.
We store the option you selected, the area, the time, and your account identifier. Each report stops being shown once it passes its own window: 12 hours for power, 24 hours for the road, 45 minutes for the weather. The report itself is not deleted, it just drops out of the live view.
When you watch an area
Tapping to follow an area stores your account identifier, the area, and the time. If you then choose to give an email address, it is stored alongside that follow so we can send you updates about the area. Your list of followed areas is private — only you can see it. You can unfollow at any time, which deletes the record.
Email updates
If you follow an area you can opt in to an email about the areas you watch: at most about one email a week, covering any of the following — new reviews, Street Pulse activity such as power or flooding reports, and rent changes. It is opt-in only, never automatic, and every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link.
These emails are sent through Brevo, a third-party email provider. Brevo therefore processes your email address, and records whether a message was opened and whether its links were clicked.
Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count visits and see which areas people look at. It sets identifiers in your browser. It is not used for advertising.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not share your email with landlords, agents or advertisers.
- We do not add you to a marketing list because you requested an area, posted a review or followed an area. The only email we send on a schedule is the update about areas you watch, and that only goes out because you separately asked for it — every message lets you stop.
- We do not show your identity next to your review.
Who else can see it
Setwl runs on Google Firebase, so data is stored and processed on Google Cloud infrastructure. Sign-in is handled by Google, and visits are counted by Google Analytics for Firebase. If you opt in to email updates, Brevo sends them on our behalf. We do not use advertising trackers.
How long we keep things
Reviews are kept for as long as the area exists on Setwl, because the value of the record is that it accumulates over time. Street Pulse reports are not deleted when they stop being shown; they stay in the record the Pulse Map counts are worked out from. A follow is deleted when you unfollow. Area requests are kept until they are approved or rejected, plus a reasonable period afterwards. You can ask for your data to be removed at any time.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act you can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you
- correct something that is wrong
- delete your account data
- delete a review you posted
- stop using your email to contact you
To do any of these, email [email protected] from the address you signed up with. We will respond within 30 days.
If you believe we have mishandled your data, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Children
Setwl is not intended for anyone under 18.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, say so on the site.
